Background and history of the Armada

The Rouen Armada is a maritime event held every 4 to 6 years in my city of Rouen, France. This event brings together dozens of tall ships and warships from all over the world. It has become a benchmark in the world of nautical events and attracts hundreds of thousands of visitors from all over the world.

The history of the Rouen Armada dates back to the early 80s, when Jean Lecanuet, mayor of Rouen at that time, was looking for a project, an idea to revitalize the city and, in particular, the banks of the Seine.

Indeed, you have to imagine that at this time, the quays of the Seine looked like a kind of large industrial wasteland made up of empty hangars and poorly paved streets.
This is how Patrick Herr, his deputy, whispered in his ear the idea of organizing a race between Rouen and New York to celebrate the centenary of the Statue of Liberty in 1986.

By the way, do you remember the story of the journey of the Statue of Liberty?
It was on June 17, 1885 that the Statue arrived in New York aboard the Frigate Isère, a mixed ship that was both a three-masted sailboat and a steam engine with an iron hull.
The frigate left Rouen in May 1885 and took about a month to arrive in New York. The statue, designed by the sculptor Bartholdi, was built and offered by France to the United States to celebrate the centenary of the declaration of independence of the United States.

In 1986, the idea of a race imagined by Patrick Herr took shape. At the start of the race called Course de la Liberté: 8 multihulls. At the same time, an UFO (Unidentified Floating Objects) race is organized on the Seine. In the city, you can also see a big American-style parade, with cheerleaders, convertible cars and confetti. A success !

And this success will give the starting signal for the great adventure of the Armada.
Since then, the Rouen Armada has become an unmissable event for all sailboat and warship enthusiasts. It takes place on the quays of the Seine in the city of Rouen, which offer a magnificent setting for admiring the ships.

In addition to celebrating the city’s maritime culture, the Armada de Rouen also serves to showcase local talent, organizing competitions for professional and amateur sailors. This event is also a meeting place for sailing enthusiasts from all over the world, who can exchange ideas and share their passion for sailing.

In conclusion, the Rouen Armada is an important event for the city of Rouen and for maritime culture in general. It celebrates the city’s maritime wealth, honors its river heritage, showcases local talent and brings together sailing enthusiasts from around the world. This is an event not to be missed for anyone who loves sailing and maritime culture.

  4. Allow plenty of time: There will be plenty to see and do during the Armada, so be sure to allow plenty of time to explore everything. Minimum 2 nights on site.
  5. Take advantage of kids’ activities: If you’re traveling with children, be sure to sign them up for kids’ activities so they can experience and learn new things.
  6. Prefer the left bank quays (opposite the cathedral) to go through the security checks because there are often fewer people. If you are a morning person, this is a good point for you because the morning is the best time to board the ships.
  7. Stay in the heart of the city to enjoy the fervor of the Armada. An Airbnb apartment or hotel located in the Vieux-Marché district or near rue Jeanne d’Arc are good choices. If you prefer more tranquility, I recommend that you find accommodation on the left bank by choosing accommodation a few minutes walk from the Rouen metro. This will take you, in no time, to the Armada and to the heart of the city. By following these tips, you will be ready to take full advantage of the Armada de Rouen 2023 and have an unforgettable time.
