Rouen Armada 2023: what’s new?

The Rouen Armada 2023, the largest gathering of sailing ships in Europe, will take place from June 8 to June 18, 2023. This event, which takes place every 4 to 6 years, attracts thousands of visitors to admire ships of all sizes and from all eras that converge on the city of Rouen to celebrate sailing. As with each new edition, the Armada is embellished with a few new features.
A new president of the Armada: Jean-Paul Rivière
This year, several new features have been introduced to improve the visitor experience. First of all, it is the arrival of a new president at the head of the ”Armada de la Liberté” association: Jean-Paul Rivière. He succeeds the emblematic Patrick Herr, 70 years old and confirmed entrepreneur, Jean-Paul Rivière wishes for this new edition “that the name of the Armada be much better known than the name of its president”.

Who better than Michel Bussi to be the sponsor of this 2023 edition. A successful Rouen writer, the author of the thriller Mourir sur Seine, whose plot takes place during the Armada, is the ideal sponsor to promote this local event in terms of national.
Two Spanish ships in the wake of the Galeon
Among the newcomers to the Rouen Armada, two Spanish ships will follow in the wake of the Galeon, which left a fond memory for the people of Rouen in 2019: the Nao Victoria and the Pascual Flores. Like all other ships, they will be free to visit every day from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
50% Norman artists
As in previous editions, the Armada is also distinguished by the quality of the musical programming. Free concerts will make people from Rouen and tourists alike dance and sing. The Normandy region, which finances the concerts of the Armada, should reveal the names of the artists who will perform in the coming weeks with the ambition of having 50% Norman artists.
300 cyclists expected for the first day of the Armada
A Paris-Rouen by bike, anyone? For the first time in the history of the Armada of Rouen, 300 cyclists will set off from the Eiffel Tower to reach the quays of Rouen on the first day of the Armada. Know that you can join them to do a few kilometers with them to support them.
More culture and ecology
In terms of culture, the emphasis was placed on the local aspect with the Rouennais Michel Bussi, sponsor of this eighth edition. The choice of the Rouen writer is not insignificant because his participation and his investment will contribute to fleshing out Rouen’s candidacy to become, in 2028, the European Capital of Culture.
On the ecology side, under the impetus of Jean-Paul Rivière, public awareness of the protection of the oceans has been set up, from 2022, with World Oceans Day. There is also talk of inviting ships specialized in saving the oceans to the Armada. Still in the ecology chapter, a focus will be made on soft mobility.
