Bastille Day in Rouen
Every July 14th, Rouen transforms: the banks of the Seine fill with families and curious visitors, café terraces overflow, and at exactly 11pm, the sky above the Presqu’île Rollet ignites. Rouen’s fireworks display is one of the most spectacular in Normandy : 20 minutes of pyrotechnics with the Seine as the backdrop. Here’s everything you need to make the most of it.

Rouen’s Fireworks Display: What You Need to Know
The traditional Bastille Day fireworks will be launched from the Presqu’île Rollet, on the left bank of the Seine. This exceptional location provides an extremely wide viewing angle from the opposite bank, making it one of the most accessible large-scale fireworks displays in Normandy.
Lasting 17 to 20 minutes, the display is clearly visible from the right-bank riverfront near the Maritime Museum. The choreography is designed to be enjoyed from multiple angles. You don’t need a perfect position to have a great experience.

An elevated launch site: the Presqu’île Rollet sits higher than the riverbanks, creating a very vertical trajectory. The effects are visible from miles away including from the hills of Mont-Saint-Aignan and Canteleu, several kilometers from the center.
The best viewing spots for the fireworks
The top viewing spots are the Seine riverbanks, Sainte-Catherine Hill, and the panoramic overlooks at Mont-Saint-Aignan and Canteleu. Each location offers a different experience: proximity versus panorama, lively crowd versus peaceful hillside.
Local guide tip: Sainte-Catherine Hill is my personal favorite. The view over Rouen with the fireworks in the background is absolutely spectacular and far less packed than the riverbanks. Bring a blanket and arrive around 10pm to find a great spot.
The Cathedral of light: A show not to miss
If the riverfront crowds aren’t your thing, or if you’d like to round out your Bastille Day evening, the Cathedral of Light is an exceptional alternative. Every summer evening after dark, the Gothic facade of Notre-Dame de Rouen becomes a giant video-mapping screen and July 14th is no exception.
For its 14th edition (May 29, September 26, 2026), the show is themed around Impressionism, in celebration of the Normandie Impressionniste festival. Two brand-new creations are projected on a loop each evening.

The two shows of the 2026 edition
A pioneering event: Rouen’s Cathedral of Light is one of the first large-scale video-mapping shows projected onto a historic monument in France. The tallest cathedral in France provides an exceptional projection surface. Thousands of locals and visitors gather here each evening. An atmosphere unlike any other, somewhere between awe and wonder.
